What You Need to Know

Understanding plantar warts, their symptoms, and when to seek professional care.

Understanding Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are growths that appear on weight-bearing areas of your feet, such as your heels. The pressure can also cause plantar warts to grow under a hard, thick layer of skin, called a callus. “Plantar” means “of the sole” in Latin. Unlike other warts, plantar warts are typically quite painful because the pressure from walking and standing forces them to grow into your skin. Underneath, the wart can have finger-like roots that reach down, making them difficult to treat from the surface.

The HPV virus causes plantar warts. It enters through small cuts or breaks in the skin on the bottom of your feet. Only a few of the more than 100 types of HPV cause warts on your feet, specifically types 1, 2, 4, 60, and 63. HPV thrives in warm, damp environments, so you are at risk when walking barefoot in locker rooms or around swimming pools.

Common symptoms include the feeling of “painful pebbles” in your shoes, pain when you compress the sides of the wart, and a circular flat spot with a depressed area in the middle. Warts may appear yellowed with a crust, and small black dots can be an easy give away.

It’s important to visit a podiatrist if you suspect you have a plantar wart. Come see us when treatments you’ve tried do not work, the wart reoccurs or multiplies, discomfort prevents regular activities, you have poor sensation in your feet, or you are unsure if the lesion is a wart. The longer you wait, the more likely the wart is to persist, so early evaluation gives you the best path to relief.

Swift Wart Treatment and Prevention

Advanced Foot and Ankle Center is excited to offer Swift, an FDA-cleared technology that has proven highly effective in the removal of plantar warts. Swift delivers low dose microwave energy through a specialized probe that targets the underlying HPV virus by stimulating a natural immune response in the body. We like to say that we’re addressing the root cause, not the symptom.

The Swift protocol involves between 3 and 4 treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart, aligning with the body’s natural immune cycle. Each treatment lasts only 5 to 10 minutes and is what we call a “sock off, sock on” treatment: limited debridement, no breaking of the skin, no bandages. No home treatment is required between visits, and patients can resume daily activities immediately post treatment.

While pain is variable and patient specific, most patients feel some level of discomfort as infected tissue temperatures are rapidly elevated over a 2 second dose of energy. The pain immediately subsides following cessation of energy delivery, and some patients report an immediate reduction in pain levels. The treatment feels similar to a small scratch or injection, lasting only a few seconds before subsiding.

To help prevent plantar warts, keep your feet clean and dry, change your socks daily, and wear sandals in locker rooms, public showers, and around swimming pools. Avoid sharing pumice stones, nail clippers, or emery boards. If you have a wart, never pick or scratch at it, and wash your hands after any contact. If prevention isn’t enough, our team is ready to help you find the right treatment plan.
